Can We Trust Pharmacuetical Companies who Publish Studies About their Drugs?
Apparently Not...
April 16, 2008
Merck Wrote Drug Studies for Doctors
By STEPHANIE SAUL
The drug maker Merck drafted dozens of research studies for a best-selling drug, then lined up
prestigious doctors to put their names on the reports before publication, according to an article to
be published Wednesday in a leading medical journal.
The article, based on documents unearthed in lawsuits over the pain drug Vioxx, provides a rare,
detailed look in the industry practice of ghostwriting medical research studies that are then
published in academic journals.
The article cited one draft of a Vioxx research study that was still in want of a big-name researcher,
identifying the lead writer only as “External author?”
Vioxx was a best-selling drug before Merck took it off the market in 2004 over evidence linking it to
heart attacks. Last fall, the company agreed to a $4.85 billion settlement to resolve tens of
thousands of lawsuits filed by former Vioxx patients or their families.
The lead author of Wednesday’s article, Dr. Joseph S. Ross of the Mount Sinai School of
Medicine in New York, said a close look at the Merck documents raised broad questions about
the validity of much of the drug industry’s published research, because the ghostwriting practice
appears to be widespread.
“It almost calls into question all legitimate research that’s been conducted by the pharmaceutical
industry with the academic physician,” said Dr. Ross, whose article, written with colleagues, was
published Wednesday in JAMA, The Journal of the American Medical Association. and posted
Tuesday on the journal’s Web site.

I have said it before... I will say it again. Pharmaceutical companies are NOT looking to help you
with your problem... they are looking to sell drugs... period.
American Parents Admit Ignorance of Omega-3 Benefits
Survey finds majority of American parents aren't aware that omega-3 DHA plays critical part in
child development
The results of a new survey show that most American parents aren't aware of the critical role that
omega-3 DHA plays in the development of children's brains and eyes.
DHA is one of two key "marine" omega-3 fatty acids essential to human cell membranes and
found only in fish, seafood and algae. (EPA is the other vital omega-3 and it also occurs only in
aquatic foods.) Of the two key omega-3s, DHA is far more important to child development. DHA is
a critical component of cell membranes, with the highest amounts found in the heart, retina, and
brain.
DHA is essential for brain and eye development and remains essential to these organs lifelong.
(The brain is about 60 percent fatty acids by weight, and DHA constitutes about one-third of
them.)
Omega-3 DHA is particularly important between birth and five years of age, when the brain
increases approximately three-and-a-half times in weight and its DHA content increases more
than fourfold. Adequate DHA intake ensures that cells in the brain, retina, heart and other parts of
the nervous system develop and function properly.
Parental survey reveals lack of knowledge. The survey results reveal some big gaps in American
parents' understanding of the role and essentiality of omega-3 DHA to child development:
* Only one in five parents was aware of the importance of DHA during pregnancy and to newborns
and infants.
* 59% of parents were not aware of the benefits of DHA to their children's health.
* Only 7% said they take steps to make sure that their child consumes DHA. Nearly three in four
said they try to ensure that their children get key vitamins and minerals, (such as vitamin C and
calcium.)
* Fewer (14 to 16%) knew that DHA is important to the health of toddlers and preschool-aged
children.
How much DHA do kids need?
The U.S. Institute of Medicine has not established a recommended daily allowance for DHA, but
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) tacitly accepts 160 mg as a reasonable daily target
for DHA intake among children over four.
Many leading health authorities and pediatricians recommend that children aged from one to five
years consume 150 mg of DHA per day, but actual DHA intakes among young American kids
averages only 20-30 mg per day
William Sears, M.D. - who's been called " America 's pediatrician" - provides the following
regarding optimal DHA intake for infants and for pregnant and nursing mothers:
* "... experts recommend at least 300 mg a day for pregnant and nursing mothers (most mothers
get only 20-25% of this amount, unless they take omega-3 fish oil supplements)."
* "Mothers should take at least 500 mg of DHA per day during pregnancy and lactation."
* "The recommendation for infants is at least 200 mg of DHA per day."
* "Practically speaking, infants under one year old receive their omega-3s through mother's milk,
but it is perfectly safe and perhaps even beneficial for infants to be given extra fish oil at a dose of
around 300 mg a day of DHA. I stress DHA rather than EPA because DHA is the main
brain-growth omega 3."
Fish, fish oil, and DHA-fortified foods are the only abundant sources of this critical nutrient.
Humans convert the plant-source omega-3 called ALA into DHA and EPA, but only 2-5% of
dietary ALA becomes DHA and EPA. (The rest is burned for energy and/or stored as fat.)
Thus, in order for a child on a strict vegan diet to produce adequate amounts of DHA he or she
needs to eat lots of leafy greens, walnuts, and flax seed (or flax oil). Vegetarian children with more
dietary latitude can get substantial amounts of DHA from enriched eggs and dairy products.
Malt-O-Meal Recalls Cereal... Salmonella Found.
Malt-O-Meal voluntarily recalled several of its cereals on April 5, because the company’s routine
testing found Salmonella in a product produced on March 24, 2008. Since the recall, FDA has
reported at least 23 people in 14 states have been diagnosed with salmonellosis caused by the
same strain of Salmonella found in the recently recalled unsweetened Puffed Rice and
unsweetened Puffed Wheat Cereals produced by Malt-O-Meal. FDA advised consumers should
throw out any recalled product in their homes, and grocery stores and other retailers should
promptly remove the cereals from their shelves. The agency is working with Malt-O-Meal to
determine the cause of the contamination and with the states and the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC) to identify and prevent additional illnesses.
The recalled products were distributed nationally under the Malt-O-Meal brand name as well as
under private label brands including Acme, America's Choice, Food Club, Giant, Hannaford,
Jewel, Laura Lynn, Pathmark, Shaw's, ShopRite, Tops and Weis Quality. The cereals have "Best If
Used By" dates from April 8, 2008 (coded as "APR0808") through March 18, 2009 (coded as
"MAR1809").
It's easy to make your own cereal... Buy whole wheat berries and place about
1/4 cup per serving in your coffee grinder. Grind for about 10 seconds. Add ground grains to
boiling water on the stove (about 1/2 cup per serving) It only takes a few minutes to cook. Add a
pinch of sea salt and milk if you like... you can make chocolate by adding a bit of cocoa powder
and a few drops of stevia... so simple and much more nutritious than something sitting on a shelf
or in a warehouse for who knows how long.

Why the Flu Vaccine Fizzled
(The New York Times, Editorial) -- "Anyone who dutifully got a flu vaccination this year only to come
down with a serious fever, chills or cough had plenty of company. An analysis issued in mid april by
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that this year's vaccine formulation was
only 44 percent effective. That feeble performance, along with the virulence of one of the strains,
made the flu season much worse than the previous three."
IN BETH'S KITCHEN
Have been doing some fasting... lots of conferences and a bit of travel so not too much cooking
going on here.
I just returned from an infomercial shoot in Southern California.
I will be promoting several
nutritional supplements I created (under name "Dr. Beth's") and also 3 of my books, "God Wants
You Well", "Recipes for Life" and "Natural Healing Handbook."
In the infomercial I was able to give
my healing testimony of several allergies and asthma several years ago. Praise God!!
Please pray for favor and for God's will to be done with these!!! Thank you! To God be all the glory!!! If
God wants to use me and television to spread the health message... so be it!!!
It will take a while to do the editing and I don't know what stations they will be airing on... so don't
be surprised it you see me on TV...
SCRIPTURE
I just love this segment of scripture in Haggai:
Haggai 2-17
And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with
glory, saith the LORD of hosts.
The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts.
The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in
this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.
In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the
LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,
f one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or
wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No. (holiness is NOT
contagious)
Then said Haggai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean?
And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean. (unholiness IS contagious)
Then answered Haggai, and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith the
LORD; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.
God has been speaking to me about holiness for years. Years ago I devoured a book on the
subject by Francis Frangipane and it really stuck in my spirit. God is calling for a bride that is pure
and without spot or blemish.
We must get off the fence of lukewarm Christianity and choose the right path that leads towards
God.
We can (are allowed or have the freedom to) do the things of the world, television, movies, video
games, etc. but what God has impressed so strongly to my spirit, is do these things really lead me
to and bless God. What kinds of things am I allowing in my eye gate, my ear gate? Unholiness IS
contagious. If we allow ourselves to be exposed... it will eventually rub off on us.
Unholiness is contagious.
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Cor. 10:31
Hope to see you all at the HCI Conference May 2nd and 3rd!!!
