Antioxidants and Cancer: Researcher admits she got it wrong

It was news when it was first revealed three years ago - and it was news again last week: antioxidant vitamins can speed up the development of cancer. But the researcher who first published the study has now admitted that she got it wrong.

The original study – which made headlines around the world – found that cancer patients who took either vitamin A (beta-carotene) or E (alpha tocopherol) supplements were 40% more likely to suffer a recurrence of their cancer than those who didn’t take any supplements.

Ever since, nutritionists and alternative therapists have tried to defend the antioxidants. But the researchers, led by Isabelle Bairati from the Quebec Research Centre, who published the 2005 study, have re-analysed their original data, and have discovered they got it wrong. The only people in the study who were seeing their cancer return were smokers who refused to kick the habit while they were receiving radiation therapy or chemotherapy.

Strangely, not a single newspaper has run with the story.

Rosemary and Herbs Can Help Fight Cancer

A recent USDA study revealed that many popular herbs are a great source of natural antioxidants-- compounds that help neutralize free radicals--more so than those reported for berries, fruits and vegetables. Research has shown that rosemary can help prevent cancer and age-related skin damage. The two key ingredients in Rosemary--caffeic acid and rosemarinic acid--are potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents, which help protect the body's cells from damage by free radicals. Rich in carnosol, Rosemary has been found to detoxify substances that can initiate the breast-cancer process. And it's a rich source of vitamin E (alpha tocopherol), another powerful antioxidant.

It's widely known that an imbalance of estrogen hormones in women can contribute to breast cancer. While conventional drugs like Tamoxifen help block the effects of estrogen, they can cause unpleasant side effects, including hot flashes, vaginal bleeding, headaches, and nausea. Rosemary, on the other hand, offers a safe and natural alternative treatment. Researchers believe that rosemary stimulates liver enzymes, which inactivate estrogen hormones.

Researchers have found a variety of benefits in pure oregano and extracted oil of oregano. Oregano contains quercetin, an ingredient that may help fight ovarian and breast cancer. One caveat: the oregano must come from the actual species of the plant, not the trace quantities found in most products we buy. True oregano grows wild in Mediterranean regions, such as Greece, and it is from this source one can extract the medicinally potent oil of oregano. So try to get the plant, or oil derived from the plant, at your local health food store.

Fresh ginger contains gingerol, which, when dried forms zingerone. This is a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that may prevent cancer. In fact, researchers from the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center believe ginger not only kills cancer cells, but also prevents them from becoming resilient to chemotherapy. Scientists combined a solution of ginger powder and water with ovarian cancer cells. In every one of their tests, the cancer cells died from being in contact with the ginger. The cancer cells either committed "suicide," or attacked themselves.

Isn't God awesome!!!???
The leaves of the trees shall be for the healing of nations.

New Childhood Vaccine: It may cause convulsions – and even kill – but it STILL gets approved

Children will soon have to receive yet another vaccine on top of the cocktail they already get – and it's one that may cause convulsions and even death. The Rotarix vaccine – designed to prevent the rotavirus infection that causes gastroenteritis – has just been approved by America's drug regulator, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), even though a new study has discovered that it may increase the rate of convulsions and even pneumonia-related deaths.

The agency decided to approve the new vaccine because earlier studies from the manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline, had not discovered any adverse effects. It has however asked the manufacturer to carry out a post-marketing safety study that involves 40,000 infants.

The most recent study, involving 31,673 infants, inadvertently discovered the possible link to increased rates of convulsions and deaths while it was assessing the new vaccine’s risk of causing intussusception, or intestinal folding, which can lead to life-threatening intestinal blockage. The previous rotavirus vaccine was withdrawn from the market in 1999 because of its intussusception risk.

In earlier studies involving 24,000 infants, the new vaccine was found to cause irritability, cough, runny nose, fever, and vomiting.

This new approved vaccine will be given to infants aged between six and 24 weeks.

Statins: Green tea and Q10 counter worst effects

Thousands of people stop taking their cholesterol-lowering statin medication because of the drug's debilitating side effects, such as pain and muscle weakness. Now scientists have discovered two simple remedies that can counter these effects - green tea and the coenzyme Q10.

Statin drugs have a toxic effect on mitochondria, the specialised structures found in all cells that are responsible for the body's energy supply.

In the new study, three statin drugs - fluvastatin, lovastatin, and simvastatin - interfered with the body's energy production, and the problem was magnified if the patient was also taking propanolol, a hypertensive. As a result, around 2.3% of patients taking a statin stop their medication.

But scientists at Harvard have discovered the worst effects can be countered either by drinking green tea or taking a coenzyme Q10 supplement. Green tea contains a substance known as deoxysappanone, which seems to have a beneficial effect on mitochondria, reducing the levels of toxic free radicals, and boosting activity and increasing energy production. The coenzyme Q10 is another successful antidote to statin side effects and mitochondrial damage. It's a naturally-occurring nutrient that can be found in fish and meat. It can also be taken as a supplement. (200-300 mg daily recommended)

Ads touting dairy for weight loss "misleading"

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Recent claims that low-fat dairy products or calcium can help people lose weight are untrue, according to a review of the published scientific literature, which shows that neither dairy products in general nor calcium intake promote weight loss.

"Don't believe the hype," Dr. Amy Joy Lanou told Reuters Health. "The ads that promote milk as helping to achieve a healthy weight are misleading; the science does not support these ads."

Lanou, an assistant professor in the department of health and wellness at the University of North Carolina in Asheville and Neal D. Barnard with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in Washington, DC, evaluated evidence from 49 clinical trials that assessed whether dairy products or calcium can help people lose weight.

Of the 49 trials, 41 showed no effects of diary or calcium on weight, two showed an increase in body weight with a dairy regimen, one showed a lower rate of weight gain and only five showed weight loss.

However, it's quite likely that an association between calcium or dairy intake and weight loss seen in some "observational" studies may be due to other factors, such as increased exercise, cutting out high-calorie foods with little nutritional value, lifestyle habits, or increasing fiber, fruit, and vegetables in the diet, the researchers say.

"Our findings demonstrate that increasing dairy product intake does not consistently result in weight or fat loss and may actually have the opposite effect," Lanou and Barnard conclude in the latest issue of Nutrition Reviews.

Lanou said she was not at all surprised by the findings because milk is designed for growth. "Milk is a food that is designed for helping small mammals grow into rather large ones in a relatively short period of time," she explained. "It is counterintuitive to think that a food that has lots of calories, fats, and protein would be helpful for weight loss."

She suggests switching to water. "We drink way too many of our daily allotted calories in milk, milkshakes, lattes, sodas and other sweetened beverages. Water is healthy and naturally calorie-free," Lanou said. "Choosing water instead of milk means you can enjoy more nutrient-dense foods such as fruits vegetables, grains, and legumes and stay within your energy needs."
