Free Radicals (Oxidative Stress) Responsible for Many Health Problems!
Oxidative stress is considered to be one of the major environmental triggers of autoimmune disease,
cancer, aging (yes, even wrinkles), and inflammation. Oxidative stress refers to the oxidation or
production of free radicals, for instance hydrogen or oxygen molecules that arent linked to other
elements. In their free form, these molecules react with other molecules and contribute to oxidative
stress. Oxidative stress, in turn, triggers and worsen symptoms in autoimmune disease. This knowledge is
important to anyone with an autoimmune disorder for two reasons:
1. Most free radicals are produced by the body's natural metabolic functions.
2. We can alter our diets and use herbs and antioxidant supplements that reduce free radical production.
Production of Free Radicals
Most free radicals are produced by the natural process of metabolism, including digesting food and
producing energy from food, and by the process of breathing and enriching blood and tissues with oxygen.
Normally, the antioxidants in food, particularly from fresh fruits and vegetables, would eradicate free
radicals. However, when diets contain an abundance of empty calories and a shortfall of antioxidant
vitamins, such as copper, manganese, vitamin C, and selenium, free radicals and oxidative stress
skyrocket. In his book UltraMetabolism, Dr. Mark Hyman compares this process to rusting.
Antioxidants remove free radicals from the body which can run rampant and actually damage cells, causing
serious illness. Many health professionals use them for treatments of stroke and neurodegenerative
diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. They have also been helpful in treating brain injury and
may slow and even prevent development of cancers.
There are numerous choices for antioxidant-rich foods, but which ones are really the best? The USDA
tested over 100 foods from all categories and developed an authoritative list of the top 20:

Coffee, Tea Tied to Lower Uterine Cancer Risk in Women
Women who drink a few cups of coffee and tea each day may have a lower risk of endometrial cancer, new
study findings suggest reported in the International Journal of Cancer.
Endometrial cancer arises in the lining of the uterus. Some risk factors have been established --
including older age, obesity and factors that expose women to more estrogen, such as late menopause and
estrogen therapy after menopause.
In the new study, researchers found that among nearly 1,100 women they surveyed, coffee and tea drinkers
seemed to have a lower risk of the uterine cancer than non-drinkers.
Women who drank more than four cups of coffee and tea each day were only half as likely as non-drinkers
to have endometrial cancer. Similarly, women who drank only tea -- more than two cups per day -- had a
44 percent lower risk of the disease. Women who drank coffee alone showed a lower risk as well, but the
evidence was not as strong. Those who drank more than two cups a day were 29 percent less likely to have
endometrial cancer, but the finding was not significant in statistical terms.
Exactly why tea and coffee might protect against endometrial is not certain. One possibility is
caffeine, according to the researchers, led by Dr. Susan E. McCann of the Roswell Park Cancer Institute
in Buffalo, New York.
When they looked only at decaffeinated coffee, the researchers found no link between the beverage and
the risk of endometrial cancer.
In addition, they note, lab research shows that caffeine induces certain enzymes that help neutralize
potentially cancer-causing substances in the body. However, other compounds in tea and coffee may also
be at work, according to McCann's team. Both beverages contain various antioxidant compounds -- like
flavonoids, catechins and isoflavones -- which help protect body cells from damage that can eventually
lead to cancer.
Still, the current findings show only an association between coffee and tea and lower endometrial cancer
risk. The question of whether the beverages are responsible for the benefit requires further research.
McCann and her colleagues point out that in this study, at least part of the benefit seemed to be
explained by coffee and tea drinkers' lower average weight.

Top Five Sources of Toxins and What YOU Can Do to Stay Healthy
Here are the top 5 sources of toxins, along with recommendations to reduce your exposure:
1. Food: Your food has more toxins than you may think. The biggest culprit for toxic exposure
is processed foods, which are full of chemicals and additives that can create symptoms ranging from
cravings and weight gain to poor digestive health and food allergies.
But it's not just packaged food to avoid. Conventional produce is also full of pesticides. In fact, over
one billion pounds of pesticides are used on food in the US alone. These pesticides have been linked to
symptoms ranging from muscle cramps and heart rate changes to irritability to emotional instability. [1]
To reduce your exposure to food toxins: Choose whole foods instead of processed foods.
In addition, choose organic fruits and vegetables. Organic produce is grown without harmful
pesticides and even better, the soil is more mineral rich. Eating organic, whole foods is a great step
you can take toward health and wellness.
2. Water: Your body is between 70 : 90% water and the water you drink is critical to hydrating
your body at the cellular level.
Tap water is teeming with toxins. The Environmental Working Group found over 140 contaminants in tap
water.[2] In addition, over the past few years, studies have shown that pharmaceuticals, like
prescription and over the counter drugs, are being found in tap water. Some of the most common drugs
found in water are: antibiotics, anti-depressants, birth control pills, seizure medication, cancer
treatments, pain killers, tranquilizers and cholesterol-lowering compounds. [3]
Many bottled waters have been shown to be just as bad as tap water in most cases, not to mention toxins
that leach from the plastic bottles themselves.
To reduce your exposure to water toxins: Read the article: The Best Water to Drink, and the Types that
Should Be Avoided. If you have only tap water in your home, you might consider getting an whole house
water filter or an Aquasana sink and shower filter, to reduce your exposure to the major toxins.
3. Environment: Whether inside your home or outside your home, the environment is also a major
source of toxins. Pollution from manufacturing, cars and second hand cigarette smoke can be challenging
to avoid. However, you can avoid a lot of the toxins inside and around your home.
Too many people use harsh household cleaners containing bleach, ammonia and other toxic chemicals that
can cause health problems ranging from nausea to skin destruction, fluid in the lungs and wheezing.[4]
To reduce your exposure to environmental toxins: Some people choose to live in rural locations for the
clean air and land. However, short of moving, you can do several things to avoid environmental toxins.
You can choose the non-smoking section of restaurants and public places. At home, you can also switch
your cleaning products to those with all-natural ingredients, like Seventh Generation brand cleaning,
laundry and dishwashing supplies.
You can also choose ,green, or chemical free products, like fabrics for furniture, which often have
flame retardant chemicals on them; or paint that does not have VOCs (volatile organic compounds).
4. Beauty and personal care products: The products we use to look our best may actually be the
biggest source of aging and other adverse symptoms. Beauty products like toothpaste, lotion, youth
creams, soap, shampoo, conditioner, perfumes and makeup are full of toxic chemicals.
Even beauty and personal care products from the health food store can be filled with ingredients that
cause harmful symptoms.
To reduce your exposure to toxins in beauty and personal care products: Read ingredient labels on your
personal care products. Anything you put on your skin is absorbed into your body.
Some important ingredients to avoid in your beauty and personal care products are: sodium laurel
sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, triclosan (found in antibacterial products), Parabens (Methylparaben,
Ethylparaben, p-Propylparaben, Isobutylparaben, n-Butylparaben and Benzylparaben), mineral oil,
petroleum, Diethanolamine DEA, Cocamide DEA, Lauramide DEA, alpha and beta hydroxy acids, talc, lanolin
and phthalates.
5. Stress and negative thinking: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
estimates that up to 90% of all illness and disease is due to stress.[5] Additionally, stress can kill
the good bacteria and yeast that live in your intestines and keep your immunity and digestive health
strong.
As the good bacteria and yeast die off, the bad bacteria and yeast are able to take over. Body Ecology
teaches that this creates an imbalanced inner ecosystem, which can set the stage for illness and
disease.
To reduce your exposure to toxins from stress and negative thinking: Because we believe in creating
strong health and well-being both physically and emotionally, we dedicate several articles to creating
your best emotional health. Here are some excellent articles on reducing stress and improving your
outlook on life:
My Favorite Detox Supplements are Chlorella and MSM!
The higher the dosage the faster you will see results.
Suggestions for chlorella: 5,000 mg - 15,000 mg.
Suggestions for MSM (be sure to get pure MSM like Drs. Best brand): 6,000 mg to 20,000 mg.
If you experience detox side effects, headache, fatigue, heavy feeling in legs and arms, nausea,
drink more water to flush the toxins OUT of the body... if you back down on your dosage it will take
longer to get rid of the toxins so try to press through.
Fructose-Sweetened Drinks Increase Metabolic Syndrome Risk
Fructose-sweetened soft drinks and other beverages can have a negative effect on the body's sensitivity
to insulin and its ability to handle fats, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke, a new study
suggests. Metabolic Syndrome Risk is basically another way of saying Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes.
The research included overweight and obese volunteers who for 10 weeks drank either fructose- or
glucose-sweetened beverages that supplied 25 percent of their energy needs. During the study period,
participants in both groups gained about the same amount of weight, but those who drank
fructose-sweetened beverages showed an increase in intra-abdominal fat.
The researchers, from University of California, Davis, also found that those in the fructose group
became less sensitive to insulin, which controls glucose levels in the body, and showed signs of
dyslipidemia -- elevated blood levels of fat-soluble molecules called lipids.
Decreased sensitivity to insulin and dyslipidemia are signs of metabolic syndrome, which increases the
risk of heart attack. But whether consuming large amounts of fructose increases heart attack risk over
the long-term isn't known, according to the authors of an accompanying commentary.
