AND ANOTHER REASON TO EAT ORGANIC.....
Chemical Used on Crops Could Make You Fat
Many people who eat organic food and use natural products are trying to avoid pesticides that are linked
to cancer and other diseases. Now Japanese researchers say there is another advantage to "going green"
and avoiding toxins and chemical additives in the environment. A common pollutant has been found to have
a potent effect on gene activity and could be contributing to the obesity epidemic.
According to an article published in the December 2008 issue of the journal Bioscience, the chemical
tributyltin affects sensitive receptors in the cells of a host of animals, ranging from water fleas to
people. What's more, tributyltin has an impact at extremely low levels - a thousand times lower than
pollutants that are known to interfere with the sexual development of wildlife species, for example. The
chemical is known to be damaging to the liver as well as the nervous and immune systems in mammals . But
what has just been recognized is that tributyltin also has powerful effects on the cellular components
known as retinoid X receptors (RXRs) in a range of species. That's important because RXRs can move into
the nuclei of cells and turn on genes that cause the growth of fat storage cells and regulate whole body
metabolism. This raises a disturbing possibility: The pollutant could be harming humans by causing
slowed metabolism and weight gain.
Scientists Taisen Iguchi and Yoshinao Katsu of the Graduate University for Advanced Studies in Japan,
who wrote the BioScience article, point out that effects of tributyltin on RXR-like nuclear receptors
could be widespread throughout the animal kingdom, including the human species. And they note that the
enormous rise in obesity over the past four decades coincides with the increased use of industrial
chemicals over the same period.
Proper Sleep May Be Good for Heart... Helps Clear Arteries
Getting an extra hour's sleep was equal to a nearly 17-point drop in blood pressure, study found
The sleep/heart report published in the Dec. 24/31 issue of the Journal of the American Medical
Association. The five-year study with 495 participants, ages 35 to 47, showed that middle-aged people
who had an extra hour of sleep each night were less likely to have artery-stiffening calcium deposits.
Socioeconomic status was one connection causing the results. A second reason is that a stress-related
hormone, cortisol, which has been tied to decreased sleep and increased calcification.
Sleep deprivation does alter the physiology of numerous body systems, so it is not surprising that
another health problem, or symptom or sign, should be related to sleep length.
There is no precise formula for the length of sleep that is best for a given individual. On average,
an individual needs between 7 and 8 hours of sleep. There is an increase in health problems with five
hours or less or nine hours or more.
I very commonly see sleep problems in the people I counsel. Most often this is due to stress and high
cortisol levels. Cortisol is also known as the stress hormone. High cortisol interferes with proper
levels of serotonin... one of your sleep and relax hormones. The combination of high cortisol and low
serotonin means you cannot enter REM sleep... This is the deep sleep we need that allows us to feel
refreshed when we do wake up. without going into REM sleep, we toss and turn all night making us feel
like we never got any sleep, even if we are in bed for 8-9 hours.
To lower cortisol levels, I recommend PS Plus to my patients. Phosphatidylserine, ashwagandha and
other ingredients in this formula help lower cortisol so you produce your own serotonin levels and get a
good nights sleep. Most people see improvement in sleep the first night they take it (dosage is two
capsules). This formula is also great for memory, stress eating and depression. The longer you take it
the more benefits you will see.
If you have had long term stress and feel your adrenal glands are not up to par you may also consider
taking 5 HTP (which is 5-Hydroxy-Tryptophan) the precursor to serotonin or pregnenalone, a hormone
balancer, especially important if you feel your sex hormones have been pushed out of balance from the
stress.
Another excellent sleep aid is GABA and make sure you are getting enough magnesium. am important
relaxation mineral depleted quickly with stress. High blood pressure and restless leg syndrome are
commonly associated with magnesium deficiency.

SCRIPTURE
If anyone desires to come after Me, let him
deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me
. Luke 9:23
The terms of discipleship are renouncing the self-life and confessing death for the self-life. "If
anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily." Initially and
continually, these humble and trusting responses to Jesus deal with self, which is the basic obstruction
to following Him. WE often allow our "selves" to get in the way of the thing God wants us to do. By
giving this up, HE gives us the grace to follow Him. But grow in the grace and knowledge of
our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." (2 Peter 3:18)
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. (Luke 9:23; John 10:27)
Most of us KNOW that God has called us to eat right (the things HE made) and take care of our Temples...
but our flesh so easily gets in the way...
I pray GRACE and more grace for each of you to continue in the ways of God and Health Blessings to
all of you in 2009!
