Drink Diet Soda; Develop Diabetes
Based upon FDA claims that aspartame is a "safe" artificial sweetener, the Calorie Control Council and
the American Diabetic Association have long been counseling diabetics who drink sodas to drink diet
sodas sweetened with aspartame. Neither organization would change their pro-aspartame tune though both
had been presented with irrefutable, independently-generated scientific proof that aspartame literally
destroys diabetics. The proof has been confirmed one more time.
A daily diet soda drinking habit is associated with significantly greater risks for select incident
components of the metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) and type 2 diabetes, according to the results of an
observational study reported online in the January 16, 2009 edition of Diabetes Care.
"Two longitudinal cohort studies have shown positive associations between diet soda consumption and
incident MetSyn independent of baseline measures of adiposity," wrote Jennifer A. Nettleton, PhD, et al,
from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston.
Initial evaluation was performed from 2000 to 2002, at which time baseline food frequency questionnaires
measured diet soda consumption. Three follow-up evaluations were performed from 2002 to 2003, 2004 to
2005, and 2005 to 2007. Careful analyses of the data revealed that, compared with participants who did
not drink diet soda, those who drank diet soda at least daily had a 36 percent greater relative risk for
incident MetSyn and a 67 percent greater relative risk for incident type 2 diabetes.
"Although these observational data cannot establish causality, consumption of diet soda at least daily
was associated with significantly greater risks of select incident MetSyn components and type 2
diabetes," the study authors wrote.
"These results corroborate findings from the ARIC [Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities] and Framingham
studies and show stronger adverse associations exist between diet soda and type 2 diabetes," the study
authors conclude. "Diet soda consumption, either independently or in conjunction with other dietary and
lifestyle behaviors, may lead to weight gain, impaired glucose control and eventual diabetes."
Omega-3 Fatty Acids Protect Against Advanced Prostate Cancer
Even men genetically predisposed to disease benefit from eating fish, study finds
Eating fish at least once a week (2 or 3 times would be even better) may reduce the risk of developing
advanced prostate cancer even if one is genetically predisposed to developing the disease, researchers
at the University of California, San Francisco said.
"Eating a healthy diet that includes dark fish and other sources of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids may
decrease risk of more advanced prostate cancer even if one has a cox-2 genetic predisposition to the
disease," said lead researcher John S. Witte, a professor in the Institute for Human Genetics,
Epidemiology & Biostatistics at the University of California. The report is published in the April 2009
issue of Clinical Cancer Research.
For the study, Witte's team studied 466 men with aggressive prostate cancer and 478 healthy men. The
researchers collected data on the men's diet and genetically assessed nine cox-2 single nucleotide
polymorphisms. "We detected strong protective associations between increasing intake of long-chain
omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and more advanced prostate cancer," Witte said. "These fatty acids
are primarily from dark fish such as salmon."
This association held even if men had a high-risk genetic variant in the cox-2 gene, Witte said. "In
contrast, men with low intake of dark fish and the high-risk variant had a substantially increased risk
of more advanced prostate cancer," he noted.
The researchers found that men who had the highest intake of omega-3 fatty acids had a 63 percent
lower risk of aggressive prostate cancer compared with men with the lowest intake of omega-3 fatty acids.
Then the researchers looked at the effect of omega-3 fatty acid in men with a cox-2 variant called
rs4647310, a known inflammatory gene. Among men with low omega-3 fatty acid intake and this variant, the
risk of developing advanced prostate cancer increased fivefold. However, men who had a high intake of
omega-3 fatty acids had a significantly lower risk, even if they had the cox-2 variant.
Focusing on more advanced tumors is important, since these tumors are most likely to take an aggressive
course and thus impact a man's survival, he added. "Moreover, our results further support the hypothesis
that long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids may modify prostate inflammation through the
cyclooxygenase (cox) pathway," Witte said.
One additional way men can reduce their risk of developing advanced prostate cancer, as well as risk of
many other diseases, is to maintain a healthy weight. Many studies have shown that being obese is
associated with increased risk of developing advanced prostate cancer.
TOP TEN BEST FOODS FOR DIABETICS
I will NEVER stop teaching the fact that Type 2 diabetes is completely curable and reversable with
the right food choices and a few supplements.
Here are a few suggestions to get you started eating more healthy!
1. Brussels Spouts and other vegetables in the cruciferous family (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower)
chemicals in these vegetables stimulates the production of insulin. Are anti-cancer also!
2. Flax Seeds (rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, and lignan fiber)
a. Fiber helps you feel full and eat less.
b. Fiber lowers blood sugar & blood pressure.
c. Fiber causes fermentation in the large bowel (it provides something for the friendly bacteria to grow upon). This aids digestion and helps to keep candida yeast levels in check.
d. Fiber reduces elevated cholesterol.
e. Fiber lowers the risk of heart disease – the leading cause of death in the U.S.
3. Bison - excellent source of lean protein... but high in Omega-3
4. Blueberries - very high in antioxidants... a low glycemic index food.
High blood sugar levels causes free radicals. The long-term effects of elevated blood sugar levels is
oxidative tissue damage (glycation). This is the cause of the diabetic complications such as cataracts,
retinopathy, macular degeneration, stiffened arteries and heart tissue via damaged lipoproteins (LDL),
and nerve destruction (polyneuropathy).
5. Greens
Lettuce (all varieties) can also be used freely by diabetics as it contains 3% or less of carbohydrates.
Tomatoes are also useful for those who want to lose weight, is low in carbohydrates and it is said to
control the level of sugar in the urine.
Greens are also excellent detox foods...
6. Cold Water Fish (rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and protein)
Omega-3’s can be obtained by regularly eating fatty fish such as salmon, cod, tuna steak (not canned),
trout, haddock, mackerel. There are no other good food sources. Supplements are available from fish oils
or flax seed oil.
Omega-3s help prevent damage to blood vessels and enhance insulin secretion and help regulate
cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
Diabetics commonly have depressed levels of EFAs, especially the Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s improve
the body’s ability to respond to insulin. They are needed for the healthy structure of the cellular
membranes and therefore, a normal response to insulin. Too much Omega-6 (from vegetable oils like
corn or sunflower oil) actually diminishes the cellular response to insulin.
The high level of glucose in diabetics interferes with their ability to convert Omega-3 into DHA and
EPA. This is significant for a number of reasons:
1. DHA (and EPA) improve the function of insulin receptors, which helps lower glucose levels.
2. DHA helps lower glucose levels as it increases blood insulin concentrations. (Hamazaki)
3. DHA is an important structural component of the retina. Degeneration of the retina is a common cause
of blindness in diabetics.
4. DHA helps regulate blood lipid levels, a risk factor for the development of atherosclerosis. Over 26
published trials have demonstrated the benefits of adding fish oils EPA and DHA to lower triglyceride
levels among diabetics, both insulin-dependent (IDDM) and non-insulin dependent (NIDDM). (Friedberg)
In fish - this conversion is already complete!! A great advantage of eating fish over flax.
7. Barley - low glycemic index whole grain...
This whole grain is rich in beta glucans (also found in oats). It lowers cholesterol, supports the
immune system, fights cancer AND helps balance blood sugar levels!!! Lots of minerals too. Wild rice is
my second choice for whole grains.
8. Lentils (and other Beans)
Beans are high in complex carbohydrates, fiber and also provide protein. loaded with minerals... and
Inexpensive also!
9. Walnuts (and Almonds)
Nuts are high in complex carbohydrates. fiber and protein. Walnuts also provide Omega-3 fats and Almonds
are alkaline which help balance your pH. If you want to snack... this is your best choice. Serving size
is 1/4 cup.
10. Sweet Potatoes
The sweet potato is a member of the morning glory family and except in name only, is not related to the
white potato. It helps prevent cancer and heart disease. It is rich in complex carbohydrates and low in
calories -(only 117 calories in a 4-oz. serving. As a good source of fiber, they help lower blood sugar
by slowing the rate at which food is converted into glucose and absorbed into the bloodstream. Also,
because they are such complex carbohydrates, sweet potatoes can help control weight.
and... Honorable Mention:
Cinnamon - not really a food, but worth mentioning here. lowers blood sugar, cholesterol and even is
good for high blood pressure!
Onions... raw or cooked, onion can lower the blood sugar level in diabetes and the greater the
dose, the faster the blood response. Anti-diabetic compounds in onion are similar to the anti-diabetic
pharmaceuticals that are used in stimulating insulin synthesis and release: allyl, propyl, disulphide
and allicin.
IN BETH'S KITCHEN
LEMON EVERYTHING! (-:
Just picked some awesome lemons... yep, right off the tree in AZ, (Watch out for those nasty thorns!) so
have been enjoying lemons in all kinds of ways.
Easy Fruit Salad
Fresh cut pineapple, raspberries and blueberries (or any other combination that sounds good to you)
top with:
Greek Gods Kifir Cheese Spread
(This stuff is awesome, tastes better than cream cheese, and better for you because of the good
bacteria (probiotics) it contains!)
rind of one lemon,
juice of 1/2 lemon
drop of real vanilla extract
sweeten with stevia liquid.
Lemon Chicken
about 8 pieces cut chicken
Marinade: (mix together)
2 heads garlic chopped
1/2 cup olive oil
1/2 cup lemon juice
oregano or Italian seasoning
crushed red pepper flakes
dash of sea salt
1 lemon cut in slices to lay on top on chicken in backing dish
Pour on marinade, stir well so all parts of chicken is coated and sit baking dish in fridge for 1-4
hours.
Bake in baking 8 x 11 dish, 350 degrees about 40 minutes.
This is also great on the grill!
Lemon Water
1/2 gallon spring water
1 lemon cut into 6 pieces- squeeze into water before dropping into water
if you want a stronger lemon flavor you can add a slash of lemon juice concentrate
(I like Santa Cruz Organic brand)
and add a few drops of liquid stevia to sweeten.
Did you know that you can greatly reduce your salt usage by exchanging lemon juice? But be sure to
always use sea salt when you do use salt.
SCRIPTURE
You saw before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out
before a single day had passed... Psalm 139:16
God has perfect knowledge of us, and all our thoughts and actions are open before him. It is better to
focus on Divine truths, applying them to our own situations (rather than letting them stress us out),
and with hearts lifted to God in prayer. God knows all things, is omniscient; that he is every where, is
omnipresent; are truths acknowledged by all, yet they are seldom rightly believed in by mankind. God
takes strict notice of every step we take, every right step and every by step. He knows what rule we
walk by, what end we walk toward, what company we walk with. He knows what our motives are... god or
bad. Wherever we are, we are under the eye and hand of God. Such thoughts should restrain us from sin.
The fear of the Lord IS REQUIRED for wisdom. In today's world especially, this wisdom is required to
survive.
We cannot see God, but he can see us. He sees and CARES ABOUT all we do and even what WE EAT!
No disguise can save any person or action from being seen in the true light by him. Every secret sin is
completely open before God. On the other hand, the believer cannot be removed from the supporting,
comforting presence of his Almighty Friend. Should the persecutor take his life, his soul ascends to
heaven to be with the Father and our Lord Jesus! The grave cannot separate his body from the love of his
Saviour, who will raise it a glorious body. No outward circumstances can separate him from his Lord. We
may be happy in any situation, by the exercise of faith, hope, and prayer.
