Why I am so excited about GABA!
Last month in preparation for the conference I spoke at on depression
I was reading up on GABA - Here is some of the interesting information
I came across:
What is GABA? GABA (Gamma Aminobutyric Acid) is an all natural
protein based compound classified as a neurotransmitter; that is, a
natural substance that helps nerve impulses cross synapses and
communicate with one another. It is the most important and most
abundant neurotransmitter in the brain. It helps induce relaxation
and sleep and acts as a balancer for the brain (which can get over
stimulated).
What does GABA do? In addition to its positive effect on the
nervous system, numerous medical studies have proven GABA to have
many other important positive effects on the body following
supplementation. First, GABA naturally stimulates the anterior
pituitary gland to secrete higher levels of Human Growth Hormone
(HGH), and as a result, people taking GABA tend to lose excess body
fat. In fact, recent studies have found that higher levels of
circulating Human Growth Hormone (HGH) are associated with less body
fat and a far better lean tissue to stored fat ratio. Second, due to
it's ability to increase circulating hGH levels, GABA has many
powerful anti-aging properties. Many people taking GABA feel
rejuvenated, in other words generally more youthful and energetic.
In fact, a majority of people taking GABA report improvements to
their skin while many older individuals report a return to darker
hair. Third, studies have shown GABA to improve sleep cycles leading
to more restful sleeping and more interesting, vivid dreaming. Fourth,
GABA has shown powerful stabilizing effects on blood pressure.
Finally, research has demonstrated GABA to be a very effective
analgesic, eliminating pain from chronic conditions such as arthritis
and lower back pain.

Diabetic? More Benefits Linked to Eating a Diet High in Whole
Grain and Fiber
Like other studies, the results of this study published in Diabetes
Care show that patients with type 2 diabetes should eat more whole
grain products and follow a diet that is low in glycemic index. They
found that women who ate higher amounts of whole grains, bran, and
cereal fiber had lower markers of inflammation (associated with heart
disease and arthritis). In addition, women who ate a
ow-glycemic-index diet (or a diet rich in foods like bran, fiber,
grains, fruits and vegetables, legumes, and nuts) also had lower
markers of inflammation.
Women who ate a high-glycemic-index diet (processed foods like soda
pop, chips, fries, corn flakes, instant potatoes, and white bread and
sugar and lacking in whole grains, fiber, fruits and vegetables, etc.)
had higher markers of inflammation.

inflammation in diabetic women, by L. Qi [WINDOWS-1252?]and
colleagues. Diabetes Care 29:207–211, 2006.

National Academy of Sciences Publishes Fluoride WARNING
A panel of the National Academy of Sciences concluded that the
maximum amount of fluoride currently allowed in the nation's drinking
water can cause health problems and "should be lowered." The
report concluded that children exposed to four milligrams of fluoride
per liter, the highest allowable level, risk developing severe dental
fluorosis, in which teeth become mottled, pitted and scarred. Because
fluoride can weaken bones, people who consumed water containing that
much fluoride over a lifetime are likely to be at increased risk for
bone fractures.

plus...Fluoride in Europe
As awareness increases in America what a toxic chemical this is, that
same tug-of-war is beginning in the UK. Currently, most of Western
Europe has abandoned fluoridation over concerns about side effects
and a lack of evidence for its effectiveness. All but four countries
in Western Europe are free from fluoridation (about 98% of Europe).
Local UK governments are currently deciding whether or not to begin
fluoridating their water supplies as a method of preventing tooth
decay. They believe the lie that fluoride in the water will alleviate
tooth decay among children. The cause of tooth decay is not a fluoride
deficiency but poor dietary and dental hygiene habits.
Problems associated with fluoride include
• Bone problems - increased risk for fractures
• Increased risk for arthritis, cancer and other illnesses
• Genetic disorders
• Lower IQs in children
• Thyroid disorders
• The formation of antibodies in blood

WHAT do we do?
Consumers can learn how much fluoride is in their tap water by asking
their local utility. You can reduce fluoride exposure by using home
water-filtration systems, which vary in their ability to remove
fluoride from 13% to 99%. Reverse-osmosis systems seem to be the most
effective at removing fluoride.
Worries about fluoride could increase demand for bottled water.
But... that can have fluoride, too, but the limits for naturally
occurring fluoride are lower. About 20 bottled-water makers add
fluoride to some of their brands, including those in home and office
coolers. Federal law limits fluoride in bottled water to 1.4 to 2.4
mg per liter if none is added by the bottler (as when the water comes
from an already fluoridated source), and to 0.8 to 1.7 mg per liter if
fluoride is added at the bottling plant. The range reflects the
climate where the water is sold, with lower allowable levels in hotter
regions. The label doesn't have to indicate fluoride content if the
bottler doesn't add it.
Even the Army is Going Organic
The selection of organic products carried in military commissaries is
growing, and according to experts in the field, it's a growing trend,
not a short-term fad. "Our larger stores have more than tripled the
number of organic products they have in stock. It's the fastest
growing category this year," said Patrick B. Nixon, chief executive
officer and acting director of the Defense Commissary Agency.
"Customers are demanding them and our mission is to listen and
respond, but increasing our organic product selection also fits in
with our emphasis on the commissary as the place for military families
to shop for healthy food at healthy savings," he added. "Shoppers
should read product labels to determine exactly what's in the food
they buy at the commissary -- whether you want reduced fat, lower
sodium or organic."
Organic food generally means foods grown without the aid of
pesticides, synthetic fertilizers or sewage sludge, and animal
products raised on organic crops without antibiotics, growth
hormones, bioengineering (GMO FREE) or irradiation. Organic foods
have been found to often provide DOUBLE the nutrient levels of
conventionally grown food. A U.S. Department of Agriculture seal is
currently the best way for customers to determine whether a product
is designated organic.
Drug Problems...
Plavix taken with aspirin nearly doubled the death rate from heart disease!!
Combining Plavix, a costly "super-aspirin," with regular aspirin
proved to be no more effective than aspirin alone for preventing
heart disease. In fact, the combination nearly doubled the death rate
from heart disease among patients who had not had heart attacks but
were at risk for them. A study on the effects of Plavix divided over
15,000 patients with heart disease into two groups -- one that took
Plavix and aspirin, and one that took aspirin with a placebo. The only
major difference was that almost 4 percent of those who took Plavix
and had not had a heart attack died over the course of the study, as
opposed to just over 2 percent of those who took only aspirin. Plavix,
which costs $3 to $4 a pill, has made more than $3 billion in sales
since its approval in 2000.
Last year alone American physicians wrote 24 million prescriptions
for Plavix. They thought they were actually helping lower the risk of
heart disease with this approach. Additionally, researchers should
have had some sort of clue about these kinds of health-harming
results, considering Plavix elevated a patient's risk of developing
ulcers by a factor of 12 versus aspirin and Nexium.

Two recent clinical drug trials have had disastrous results for
the participants, leaving a number of volunteers either dead or
hospitalized.
11 Dead: Japanese drugmaker Eisal announced 11 patients died
during a trial for Aricept, a cholinesterase inhibitor, which was
being tested as a treatment for vascular dementia. None of the
patients who received a placebo, rather than Aricept, suffered any
ill effects.
6 Critically Ill: Six men also fell critically ill after a
clinical trial of the anti-inflammatory drug TGN1412. Four of them
are showing improvement, but two remain in critical condition. The
test marked the first time the drug had been given to human subjects,
and the six volunteers it was administered to had to be admitted to
intensive care almost immediately.
The Elephant Man: After taking the drug, a once healthy 28-year-old
man in critical condition has a face so swollen he looks like the
"Elephant Man," according to a loved one. He participated in the
trial, which paid $3,500, in order to pay bills.

WHAT'S COOKING IN BETH'S KITCHEN...
Granola (sooo good with homemade yogurt)
4 cups old-fashioned thick rolled oats
1 1/2 cups wheat germ
1 cup sesame seeds
1 cup sunflower seeds (or slivered almonds
- which is what I like better)
1/2 cup raw whole almonds
1/2 cup flax seed
1 cup raisins - I like the jumbo flame ones
but you have to watch that they don't burn
2 teaspoons cinnamon (be generous!)
Dash of sea salt
Dash of cayenne pepper
(optional, but you know I put it in mine!)
1/2 cup honey or maple syrup
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/2 cup water
Combine dry ingredients into a large bowl. Heat honey, oil, and
water until well blended. Add to dry ingredients and mix until all
dry ingredients are moistened. Place on two cookie sheets or large
baking pans; bake at 350 degrees F. for about 30 minutes.
Stir every 10 minutes.
Spicy Thai Coconut Chicken Vegetable Soup
Start cooking rice (takes about 45 minutes)
1 1/2 cup uncooked brown rice
2 1/2 cups water
In a large saute' pan cook the chicken, onion and garlic in
coconut oil on medium heat,
add the coconut milk and set aside on simmer
1 or 2 large chicken breasts - cut into small (1 to 1 1/2 inches)
2 tablespoons coconut oil
1 sweet onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 can organic light coconut milk
In a larger pot combine and saute for about 5 minutes:
1 tablespoon coconut oil
1/4 cup chopped fresh ginger root
1 cup chopped carrots
1 red bell pepper, diced
4 cups chopped broccoli (actually, I waited on this about 10 minutes
after I added the liquids as I didn't want mine over done)
Add and simmer 25 minutes:
1 (14 ounce) can light coconut milk
3 cups organic chicken broth
1 cup white wine
3 tablespoons fish sauce
(optional - I didn't have any so just skipped it)
2 tablespoons soy sauce
Splash of lemon juice
3 Thai chile peppers
2 tablespoons chopped fresh lemon grass
1 tablespoon hot Thai curry paste
1 teaspoon saffron
About 1/2 way through add the chicken to the vegetables
Just before serving stir in:
3/4 cup plain yogurt (or sour cream)
Serve in a large bowl (like a soup) on the rice
Add fresh cilantro, for garnish
Serves about 6
Yes, this was OUTSTANDING!!!

HEALTH TIP OF THE MONTH: JUST SAY.. "NO MORE MICROWAVE!!!!"
Even better, throw it out or do like I do... (Because it's attached to
the wall) store pots and pans in it!!!
Microwaves destruct and deform food molecules -- wiping out vital
nutrition and creating potentially harmful compounds (even cancer
forming ones). One study confirmed that broccoli "zapped" in the
microwave lost up to 97 percent of its beneficial antioxidant
chemicals.
